Austrian Pitched Cowbells

Austrian pitched cowbells, also known as Alpine bells or almglocken, typically refer to bulbuous brass bells that were at one time worn by cows and sheep and were tuned differently to distinguish individual animals.  They were collected from the pasture and arranged in an order that would make them compatible with modern instruments. The metal clapper is retained, and they are played by shaking them in a continuous motion, rather than struck one time like church handbells.

Austrian cowbells are not to be confused with clapperless cowbells, which are struck with a stuck, and are an important element in Latin-American  music.  More recently, the cowbell has been used with Hip-hop, rap, and was made popular by a Saturday Night Live skit known as "More Cowbell!"
